Local-Approved Famous Spots For Breakfast In Ipoh

As much as we locals complain about the ever-increasing prices and crowds of tourists, these breakfast venue in Ipoh still have great food and coffee to offer.

But for all these places, we highly advise going as early as you can for the best possible dining experience!

Come take a look at this list and see if any appeal to you.

1. Thean Chun

We come here for the gai se hor fun alone as it is still our favorite in Ipoh.

But know that this is the most expensive bowl of gai se hor fun around. From our last visit, it cost RM10 for a regular-sized portion. Although they are generous with chicken and prawns.

The broth still tastes full-bodied with just the right level of saltiness and sweetness.

Coffee is not bad and the same goes for their egg custard and curry chee cheong fun. Pork satay is chewy but well-seasoned. We think it’s a great accompaniment to the gai se hor fun.

• Opening hours: 8am to 4:30pm on most days – they open at 7:30am and close at 1pm on Wednesdays (Closed on Thursdays);

2. Moon De Moon

This is another place for good gai se hor fun although the broth is sweeter than at Thean Chun. Personally, we prefer the gai se hor fun at Thean Chun.

If you go early enough, you might get a chance to try Moon De Moon’s equally tasty dry curry noodles too before it sells out. This can be as early as 10:30am.

Expect long waiting times (sometimes close to an hour) at peak hours (~9am) and on weekends. To ease hunger pangs, we recommend trying the chee cheong fun stall.

Note: There might be a jackfruit and roasted pork stall in front of Moon De Moon

3. Kedai Makanan Nam Heong

This is the original coffee shop behind the local food franchise, Nam Heong. You might have seen their branches in KL before.

Many tourists are aware of its existence so prepare for breakfast crowds at any day of the week.

After you get over the two hurdles of finding parking and a table (which you’ll most likely have to share with other tourists):

There is a lot of food to try at Kedai Makanan Nam Heong. We like their fresh egg tarts, curry mee, fried radish cakes (lo bak go) and coffee.

4. Kedai Kopi Sin Yoon Loong

Kedai Kopi Sin Yoon Loong is one of the oldest coffee shops in Ipoh. It is directly across from Kedai Makanan Nam Heong.

Ipoh white coffee is the main star here. But there are other dishes to try like wanton mee. They have toast with soft boiled eggs and nasi lemak too.

Some customers do choose to sit at Kedai Kopi Sin Yoon Loong for the coffee, but order dishes from Kedai Makanan Nam Heong.

5. Stadium Indera Mulia (Perak Stadium)

This local food court has not one but a few gems to check out. Although they might not all be open depending on which day of the week you choose to visit.

The first is stall No.36, Min Chee Wan Ton Mee (Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays). There’s no other wanton mee like this one in Ipoh. The texture of the noodles is incredibly springy, and the sauce is unique, albeit a bit oily.

Portions have always been small, so do size up if you are a big eater. If you want char siew, you must make a request for it as the plate of wanton mee usually only comes with a bowl of small, but delicious pork wantons in a tasty anchovy broth.

PS: The pan mee stall a few stalls to the right of No.36 has excellent pan mee. Great value for money and the soup is delicious without needing MSG.

The second famous stall here is stall No.43, Gerai Fai Kee (Closed on Thursdays). We suggest coming here before 9am if you want to avoid their infamous long serving times of more than 30 minutes per bowl.

Besides their signature fish head noodles which we always miss when we’re out of town, they have a yummy pork soup noodles too. And it is worth ordering their fried side dishes.

Conclusion

As long as you are prepared to go early, you can’t go wrong with any of these breakfast spots in Ipoh. We’ve been to each of these places numerous times and still think they’re worth it.

Alternatively, good dim sum restaurants are plenty in Ipoh too.
