Moon De Moon – Famous For Gai See Hor Fun And White Coffee
Moon De Moon is a simple coffeeshop, but its signature dish draws a full crowd regularly. All the locals know about this place. And many from other states know about it too.
What is so great about this eatery then?
Here’s what we think of it.
About Moon De Moon
Restoran Moon De Moon isn’t a restaurant as per the name. It’s more of a hawker joint that primarily serves as a breakfast spot.
The neighborhood that this eatery is in has many old shops and houses. Moon De Moon is at a corner lot in a row of shophouses that face the Kinta River.
Reasons To Go
The main highlight of visiting Moon De Moon is the food. Gai see hor fun are what most tables will order and for good reason.
Their gai see hor fun is tasty and flavorful. You get almost the bare minimum of soup (i.e. enough to cover the noodles) with the gai see hor fun.
If you want to compare the taste of Moon De Moon’s gai see hor fun to that of Thean Chun’s, we prefer the latter. Because Moon De Moon’s gai see hor fun is more sweet than salty. But both have a rich prawn taste to the broth.
Between them, Moon De Moon’s gai see hor fun is more affordable too – RM7.50 a bowl vs the steep RM9 a bowl that Thean Chun charges.
Note: If you’re a big eater, ask for a bigger portion of noodles (RM8 per bowl).
There are other stalls at Moon De Moon. The chee cheong fun stall is not bad but not great either. It is lacking sauce. Other stalls sell yee mee or wantan mee and we can only say that they are average.
White coffee is another winning factor for Moon De Moon.
The eatery may not have air conditioning, but it’s still comfortable in the early morning. They have a lot of seating outside the shop too.
While you’re here, you can get fruit or roast pork from the two stalls that are normally parked right in front of Moon De Moon.
Reasons Not To Go
Moon De Moon’s popularity means that the signature dish can sell out by 10am. On weekdays, you can try your luck at having gai see hor fun for lunch as the stall is sometimes open past 12pm.
You might have heard that you can get a great dry curry mee at Restoran Moon De Moon too. But no longer as they no longer sell it.
PS: They only accept payment by cash here
If you’re planning to visit on a weekend, it’s best to come as early as possible. 7:30am can be the difference between a 30-minute wait compared to an hour’s wait for the food if you come at 9am instead.
At peak times, you might have to wait additional time for a table if you wish to dine in.
Rampant litter on the side of the road makes the surroundings very untidy unfortunately. Stray dogs are a common sight in this area too.
There are no tourist attractions close to Restoran Moon De Moon. But the eatery is 4 minutes’ drive from another foodie spot, Stadium Indera Mulia.
Conclusion
Moon De Moon is a highly recommended place for fantastic (albeit a little sweet) gai see hor fun in Ipoh. Just be aware that this is a highly popular breakfast spot and crowds are inevitable.
Is the food worth a 2-hour wait though? We think not so you better go as early as you can manage if you are keen on trying the food here.
